Despite large amounts of support from legislators and California citizens, on October 7 Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a piece of legislation that would decriminalize the possession, preparation, obtaining, and transportation of small amounts of certain psychedelics including psilocybin, mescaline, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) for people 21 or older within the state of California. The Governor’s reasoning for vetoing this popular legislation: it doesn’t go far enough. Newsom released a statement alongside his veto stating his unequivocal support for the regulation of psychedelic medicine and the provision of treatment of such medicines. Newsom stated, “I urge the legislature to send me legislation next year that includes therapeutic guidelines. I am, additionally, committed to working with the legislature and sponsor of this bill to craft legislation that would authorize permissible uses and consider a framework for potential broader decriminalization in the future, once the impacts of dosing, best practice, and safety guardrails are thoroughly contemplated and put in place.” 1 California appears poised to follow Oregon and Colorado in the forefront of psychedelic medicine and treatments once legislators can bring forward a new bill in the following legislative year.
